Seeds

Science magazine SEED has just run a feature on..erm... seeds.  I was really taken by this image - grabbed from a slideshow illustrating how the Global Crop Diversity Trust has dug a big whole in Northern Norway in which they have built a seed vault.

An ice sculpture of the visually iconic polar bear howled into the arctic wind and snow during the opening ceremony.  

While SEED's accompanying article describes how the vault will act as a genetic resource in the doomsday scenario of diversity failure I'm not sure what their plan for the bear will be...
